Mr. S.P. Oswal born in 1942 is the Chairman of the Vardhman Group. He holds a Masters Degree in Commerce with Gold Medal from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Mr. Oswal has over 40 years of experience in the textile industry.

Owing to his entrepreneurial drive, vision and leadership, Vardhman Group today has the largest yarn manufacturing capacity in the country with over 8,00,000 spindles. It has one of the largest fabric weaving plants and also has one of the most modern yarn and fabric processing facilities in the country. The Group achieved a turnover of Rs. 4000 crores in the financial year 2009-10. Vardhman Group employs around 23,000 people at its various plants. The Group is known for professional management and has strong track record of performance. The Group Companies are listed in the most promising list of growing companies in the country.

Apart from being the Chairman and Managing Director of Vardhman Textiles Ltd, Mr. Oswal held several other eminent positions which include Chairman of the National Committee on Textiles, Confederation of Indian Industry; Director of Exim Bank of India; Director of UTI Trustee Company Pvt. Ltd; Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; Member of National Council, Confederation of Indian Industry; Member of Industrial Advisory Council, Government of Madhya Pradesh; Member, Board of Governors of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar; Member of Senate, Panjab University; Founder President and Director (1983-87) of Ludhiana Stock Exchange and Chairman of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Mr. S P Oswal has also under taken a number of socially responsive initiatives. He led a project to adopt villages and improve the yield of cotton in Punjab. He also led a consortium of Industries for developing a facility for storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous industrial wastes.

Sprung from a keen desire to set up an educational institution in Ludhiana and inspired by the writing of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, Mr. Oswal set up a trust by the name of Sri Aurobindo Socio Economic and Management Research Institute. This trust has set up a college-Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management (affiliated to the Panjab University) with the mission to create an institution with distinction dedicated to the ideals of creating disciplined career oriented young people ready for taking administrative and management roles in enterprises or to set up their own business as entrepreneurs.

Mr. S P Oswal was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2010. This award is recognition of his service to the nation not just as one of India’s leading industrialists but also as someone who’s altruistic concern for people’s welfare and advancement has contributed to the well being of humankind in the State of Punjab. He was also awarded the Udyog Ratna by Panjab University for his significant contribution to industrial development.
