NSS Activities
The college aims at creating compassionate and socially responsive citizens. It is therefore required to arouse the social conscience of students by exposing them to realities of life and bring a change in their social perception. To bring this change the College NSS Unit organizes a number of activities every year since its inception. Some of the activities are: -
Visit to Senior Citizen Homes
The NSS Unit organizes visits to two Senior Citizen Homes Geeta Vridhashram situated in Village Threeke and Vivekanand Vridhashram situated in Model Town. The objective of these visits is to inculcate a sense of responsibility towards the abandoned and secluded sections of society. Students from different classes visit and spend days with senior citizens, listen to their joys and sorrows and try to fill their monotonous lives with love, affection and warmth.
Health awareness talks The NSS Unit organizes Health awareness talks for students on different health issues like life Style diseases and healthy eating habits, eye care, dental care etc. The NSS unit invites Doctors from reputed hospitals and specialists in their fields to interact with students. The students also conduct awareness rallies to create awareness about various health issues in nearby villages.
Medical Camps and Motivation to Contribute to Eye Pledge Programmes The NSS Unit organizes Medical Camps in villages in collaboration with a team of doctors from reputed hospitals and the College makes arrangements for distribution of free medicines to the needy. Also eye check up and dental check up camps are organized for the students. Through such camps, the members also motivate students to take part in ‘Eye donation programmes’ to take pledge to donate their eyes after death to needy patients.
Red Ribbon Club for Spreading Aids Awareness
The NSS Unit of the College has constituted the Red Ribbon Club which works under the guidance of The National AIDS Control Organization for promoting ‘Aids awareness campaign’ through a joint collaboration of Pushpa Gujral Science City and the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh. The RRC spread HIV/AIDS awareness amongst the college going students and make them extend the message to the society at large about various precautionary measures that help in controlling AIDS.
CONTRIBUTION FOR THE UNDERPRIVILIGED
NSS Camps for ‘Ek Prayaas’ and Fund raising The NSS Unit organizes four to five days long camp during the vacations in Ek Prayaas- a school for children with special needs which is run by an NGO, Social Action Group. The volunteers spend time in delivering the functional knowledge to the mentally retarded students studying in the school. They also help the special children in making hand made articles and in selling these at various exhibitions. The Funds generated from the sale are used to provide better facilities to these students.
NSS Unit’s contribution to Orphanage
The NSS Unit organize visit to an orphanage situated in Sarabha Nagar. The members donate clothes, money and eatables for the kids staying. Members also celebrate various festivals with these kids.
Contribution for victims of natural calamities
The NSS unit takes initiative to contribute to the places of the widespread destruction caused by the devastating flash floods and other natural calamities which lead to huge loss of life and property. The NSS volunteers make efforts to raise funds and clothes for victims of natural calamities such as flash floods, tsunamis, earthquakes etc.
Environment Protection through Plantation Drives
The College organizes plantation campaigns regularly to involve the young generation to work for the cause of environment protection as a token of gratitude to the Mother Nature. The students are urged to plant at least one tree to save the environment from degradation.
Medicinal Plant Show
The NSS volunteers undertake training at Divisional Forest Department, Ludhiana to get education about the medicinal values of different plants.
Literacy campaign
The unit runs a literacy campaign to provide basic education to the class IV employees of the College and their children living in the campus. This is carried to make them literate and improve their standard of living.
Blood Donation CampsThe NSS unit organizes Blood Donation camps every year in collaboration with local blood banks to donate blood for the needy patients and thalassemic children.
